Hyaluronic Acid: What’s the Buzz About?

A close up on drops of moisture

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is widely known for being an effective anti-aging ingredient, but did you know that this natural substance also plays an important role in keeping our skin healthy? HA occurs naturally in the body, helping to bind water molecules together, and giving our skin moisture, plumpness and a youthful appearance.

Boost hydration and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

What’s the buzz about?

Hyaluronic acid has become one of the most sought-after ingredients in skincare today. And it's no wonder why – this powerful substance offers numerous benefits to help you plump up your skin. HA is capable of holding up to 1000 times its own weight in water molecules, which makes it incredibly effective at keeping skin hydrated. This helps to improve overall skin health as well as provide a temporary anti-aging effect that may reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet.

The Many Names of Hyaluronic Acid:

Hyaluronic acid can be found in many forms, including gels, creams, lotions and serums. Depending on the brand, it may have different names such as hyaluronan or sodium hyaluronate. Regardless of the name, all forms work similarly to provide moisture and protection for skin.

What Exactly is HA?

HA is a glycosaminoglycan that occurs naturally in the body’s connective tissues. It binds with water molecules to create a plumping effect that helps to reduce wrinkles and keep skin firm and hydrated. It's also a powerful antioxidant that helps protect against free radical damage caused by environmental stressors.

This skincare treatment that works to restore moisture content and create a smoother, renewed appearance. Size Matters:

When it comes to HA, size matters. The smaller the molecule, the deeper it can penetrate into the skin’s layers. Molecules that are larger than 500 Da (daltons) will remain on the surface and provide a moisturizing effect only. Products with smaller molecules – between 50-500 Da – can help to keep skin hydrated while also providing an anti-aging benefit.

How to Use HA:

There are many misconceptions about HA that have caused confusion among consumers. One of these is that hyaluronic acid can cause breakouts or irritation in some people – this is partly true. Although HA is beneficial for all skin types, especially those with dry and dehydrated skin, the problems seem to come in prolonged usage. So, while in the short term it can provide positive results, it’s not something you want to incorporate in your routine all year round. Therefore, we’d recommend saving it for special occasions - a red carpet event, a wedding, a big work presentation. This way, you get those juicy, immediate plumping effectives we love from HA without the potential irritation that can come about from using it on the daily.
