Today's discussion revolves around the eight gravest errors you're likely making in your skincare routine. With sales season just around the corner, it's crucial to avoid squandering your hard-earned money on ineffective products. Our objective is to empower you with the right knowledge before you invest your paycheck on the latest skincare products, anticipating miraculous results that may never materialize.

The most common blunder I observe daily is the lack of a focused skincare routine. Often, when I question why people use a series of products—a toner with exfoliating acids, a serum, another hydrating serum, a moisturizer, an occlusive, and an oil—they don’t know how to respond. What's crucial is a skincare routine that targets your most significant skin concern.

Most people grapple with several skin issues simultaneously. Still, if you attempt to tackle all these problems at once, you'll never discern which issue is improving or which product is generating the desired outcome. This approach only compounds confusion in the long run, leading to disillusionment and a misguided belief that only drastic methods like laser treatment can help.

Tuning into the Signals Your Skin Sends

Identify your primary skin issue, be it pigmentation, redness, acne, or dehydration. Tailor a consistent, streamlined routine that addresses this problem and adhere to it for at least two months. Over these two months, as you notice improvement, you can slowly introduce products that tackle other issues, building a stronger, more effective routine over time. This method has yet to disappoint.

Tuning into the signals your skin sends is crucial. It involves touching, understanding, and genuinely listening to your skin, as it sends signals every day. There will be days when your skin feels irritated, and on those days, it's important to avoid harsh treatments like exfoliating acids or retinol, even if your routine suggests otherwise.

    The Climate Effect

The climate you live in should inform your skincare routine. If you have oily skin and live in a humid climate, you might not need additional moisturizer. If you're in a dry climate and have dry skin, layer on the hydration with mists, serums, and moisturizers. Understanding your skin and climate is key.

The Truth about Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Let's talk about hyaluronic acid (HA). Despite the beauty industry's portrayal of HA as a must-have ingredient, it's not a magic potion. It's ubiquitous and therefore you need to be cautious about the quantity of HA in your routine. Low molecular weight HA, for instance, may induce an inflammatory response when used excessively, leading to long-term inflammation of the skin. So, it's not wise to invest in expensive low molecular weight HA serums.

    Avoiding Over-Exfoliation

Over-exfoliation is a serious issue. Before the pandemic, very few people exfoliated. However, with the onset of the pandemic, there was an overzealous adoption of exfoliation, bordering on the extreme. It seems we haven't eased off on exfoliation, and people are still going overboard with it.

Here, we need to distinguish between deliberate over-exfoliation, which is nothing short of a misdemeanor, and accidental over-exfoliation, which is just unfortunate. Many products contain exfoliating acids while not being clearly labeled as exfoliants. Therefore, consumers should be discerning and look out for ingredients such as glycolic, lactic, mandelic, and salicylic acids. If you're applying your favorite serum twice daily, plus an exfoliating acid and a toner that contains another exfoliating acid, you may be overexfoliating. The key is knowing which products contain these acids to avoid overuse. A rule of thumb: exfoliate only three to four times a week, ideally in the evening after you've cleansed your face from the day, not in the morning when your skin may become more sun-sensitive.

    Pillowcases and Hygiene

Next, let's discuss pillowcases. Similar to wearing the same underwear for seven days straight, not changing your pillowcases regularly can lead to hygiene issues. If you lack the time to change them frequently, you can resort to simple tricks like flipping the pillow over or turning the pillowcase inside out. The goal is to avoid sleeping on the same surface for multiple nights. Personally, I change my pillowcase twice a week. If you're a drooler, this habit becomes even more crucial to prevent your saliva from lingering on the pillowcase, potentially breeding bacteria that can affect your skin afterwards.

    Laser Treatments: No Magic Bullet

Laser treatments should not be seen as a magic bullet and it's disheartening when someone expresses disappointment after a single treatment. The truth is, the effectiveness of lasers greatly depends on your daily skincare routine post-treatment. If, for example, you're seeking a fraxel treatment for hyperpigmentation, but your skincare regimen does not address this issue consistently, the laser treatment's benefits may be short-lived. Therefore, before considering laser treatment, it's crucial to maintain a solid and relevant skincare routine for at least six to eight weeks.

    The Sunscreen Non-Negotiable

Finally, sunscreen use is non-negotiable. Despite being the last on this list, it is arguably the most critical step in your skincare routine. The sun can prematurely degrade collagen, leading to wrinkles, and exacerbate pigmentation issues like sunspots and discoloration. Using sunscreen is the most proactive protection you can offer your skin.

Continuous exposure to the sun gradually weakens the collagen in your blood vessels, leading to signs of aging like redness, broken capillaries, and brown spots on your face. Additionally, it can contribute to skin sagging and volume loss. Hence, if you're investing time, effort, and energy into your skin and skincare routine, make sure to include sunscreen. It's your best defense for maintaining healthy skin over time.
