A Comprehensive Hair Care Routine to Combat Shedding and Hair Loss

A woman with thick and healthy hair

If you’ve ever experienced excessive shedding or even hair loss, you know how frustrating it can be. The good news is that there are steps you can take to help prevent further damage and even regrow your hair. In this blog post, I’ll be sharing an in-depth hair care routine developed to help combat shedding and hair loss. Read on to learn more!

Leave in treatments

Before we get down to the right shampoo and conditioner to use, we need to talk about more targeted treatments first. I tend to do a leave in treatment night before I’m going to wash my hair to allow the products to fully absorb and to work to their full potential. If you like to use treatments in the AM, be my guest, but I personally find them to be a little too heavy for daytime use.

Rogaine Foam for Hair Regrowth

I massage my scalp with Rogaine Men’s Foam for Hair Regrowth twice per week. This product contains minoxidil, which promotes healthy blood flow throughout the scalp and supports natural follicle stimulation. There have been lots of peer reviewed studies on the efficacy of minoxidil so this is a safe bet for anyone looking for scientifically backed ingredients. Massaging your scalp can also help reduce stress hormones which can lead to excessive shedding or even balding over time, so take your time when applying the product and get that double whammy of benefits.

For the ends of the hair, I love the Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector. This cream helps to restore bond structure for healthier, stronger hair and finding this product was a revelation for me. I use quite a lot, on purpose, because it helps to minimize breakage as well as to prevent split ends from forming. It’s also really rich in glycerin, an ingredient I love for skincare as well.

Shampoo & Conditioner

My hair is at its healthiest when I wash it approximately two to three times a week, depending on my level of activity. The first step is to use a cleanser specifically designed for thinning or damaged hair. Not only does this help keep your scalp clean, but it also helps regulate oil production and remove any product buildup that may be weighing down your strands.

GrandeHAIR Peptide Shampoo

I use GrandeHAIR Peptide Shampoo, which is specifically designed for damaged hair, to gently cleanse my hair without stripping away its natural oils. This professional strength shampoo is infused with Hexapeptide-11 to help naturally exfoliate the scalp and cleanse hair follicles of debris and oils.

Once your strands have been cleaned, it’s important to moisturize them with a conditioner or mask to nourish the scalp and prevent breakage from occurring at the root level.

L’Oréal EverStrong Thickening Conditioner

I use a dime-sized amount of L’Oréal’s EverStrong Sulfate Free Thickening Conditioner and distribute it evenly throughout my hair, focusing on the ends first. This strengthening anti-breakage conditioner is specifically formulated for thin fragile hair prone to breakage. It helps nourish and strengthen my hair, making it look shiny and healthy immediately after the wash.

Pre Styling

After having gotten dressed, my hair is much drier and it’s time to apply a little more of the Olaplex No. 3. I only use this product the night before I wash my hair and literally right after washing my hair. I’ll put a lot of the product on the tips of my hair because I really am trying to protect my hair from breakage and from split ends. Once I’m done, I lock in that moisture with a couple of drops of Shu Uemura’s Essence Absolue.

Shu Uemura Essence Absolue

A nourishing and protective essence infused with camellia oil to help protect the hair. it protects hair with intense nutrition and provides uv protection without weighing down even the finest of hair.

Now it’s choose your own adventure time — you can either brush it through and leave it to air dry or continue onto the next step if you really feel the need to blow dry (but remember, the less you use heat tools, the better condition your hair will remain in).

Blow Drying

I spray in Speed Dry by Color Wow at the roots of the hair, and then add a little lifting spray from Rita Hazan, again at the roots, to help give a little bit more volume. When you lose hair, particularly from the front of your hair line, you can get very insecure about your scalp showing through. Anything that gives volume can therefore give you a little bit of a psychological lift. I find that both these products are great at protecting against humidity and heat damage—two of the biggest culprits when it comes to shedding. The Speed Dry in particular creates a weightless shield around each strand of hair, preventing breakage so that you don’t have to worry about losing more precious locks due to styling tools or environmental factors like sun exposure or wind.

Speed Dry by Color Wow

This alcohol-free spray reduces drying time (blow dry or air dry) by 30% or more, using new technology that works like shrink wrap to squeeze out water without dehydrating hair and providing heat protection.

This lightweight powerhouse includes built-in patented UV absorbers to keep your color crisp, and a proprietary protein-enriched complex that strengthens while blocking frizz.

So just remember, take care of your hair a little before the wash and a little bit after the wash and ta-da, you’ll have strong and smooth strands in the weeks and months to come. Remember, hair grows only half an inch a month so persevere and stay consistent with this routine and you’ll start seeing promising results in one to five months. Just think about it this way, six months from now you’ll have that glossy mane of your dreams.
